Welcome to the beautiful planet earth. We are so blessed to call this place our home. A place full of diversity, full of life, full of love. All one has to do is walk outside to see an amazing sunset, or a vibrant patch of flowers. And yet, sometimes we forget how precious the earth really is. We forget how much of an effect our actions can have on the environment. So, we muddle along, going about our daily lives, pushing these problems aside. Eventually, though, we won’t be able to push these problems aside any longer. Eventually these problems will become an everyday reality.
There are so many environmental issues that drastically affect the world today. Global warming, air pollution, land pollution, and toxicants are only a few of the problems that we face. Water is scarce in several areas of the world. In fact, less than 1% of the water on earth is actually drinkable. How scary is that? In addition to these issues, several animals in the world are endangered, or have gone extinct. It’s crazy to think that just one person could help to fix some of these major issues in the world today; to think that just one individual could actually make a difference. But that’s just it; you CAN!
Have you ever actually stopped to think about how your daily actions are impacting the world around you? Did you know that the clothes you wear are not necessarily environmentally friendly? It takes approximately 2,900 gallons of water to grow cotton for one pair of jeans. Yep. Just one pair. In addition, Americans use approximately 82.4 million barrels of oil per day. Also, the United States currently uses one fifth of the world’s greenhouse gases, which are expected to emit 6.4 billion metric tons of C02 by 2030. Need I say global warming? And these are only three of the many issues that we contribute to every day…
So what can YOU do? Well for starters, this is a team effort. We all must do our part for things to really change. After all, it IS a pretty big world out there! However, your efforts are not to go unnoticed. So, do what you can. Because these issues are so broad, there are a lot of things you can do. I think the best way to start helping our environment is to learn about it and educate others. The more people that are aware of the issues, the better, and the more people there will be to actually act upon these issues. Then, it is all about getting involved. We are so blessed to have so many organizations and groups that work to fix these issues. Do some online research and see if there are any near you that you can attend. WWF and The Nature Conservancy are two wonderful organizations that I know of, but there are so many more out there. And if there isn’t one near you, then maybe you can try and form one! If nothing else though, try to see what you can do on your part to make this world a better place. Perhaps that means taking a shorter shower, picking up some trash on the way home, turning off the lights, unplugging electronics, walking to work, buying less clothing, recycling, etc. There are SO many opportunities for us to SAVE this amazing place we call home. What will you do?
How will you help to make this environment a better place? Happy Earth Day! Thank you for reading.
