Letting Go Of What No Longer Serves You

To me, change is one of the most difficult things to face in life.  However, change is inevitable and can occur at anytime in our lives whether it is expected or not.  In order to live life to it’s fullest potential, we have to be able to anticipate and appreciate change.  As challenging as it may be, change is amazing.  Change helps us to strengthen and grow as individuals, and allows us to create our lifelong dreams.  Once we learn to embrace the power of change, we must be brave enough to let our past experiences go, despite how wonderful they may have been.

Often times, especially at this time of year, we spend too much time and effort focusing on the past.  We even feel discouraged, analyzing all the things we could have done to make a situation better.  We start to reflect on previous memories and feel upset, knowing we may never be able to experience them again.  We miss others and we just wish there was something we could do to make them be with us again.

It can be so hard to avoid this vicious cycle.  However, concentrating on the past will consume us.  Letting go of things that no longer serve you is crucial to living a joyous and peaceful life.

In order to let go of the past, we have to learn to focus on the present.  We must choose to see the beauty in the world around us, wherever that may be.  With change comes the creation of new experiences, new connections with others, and new dreams.  It is up to us to find these things and appreciate them.  We have the choice to find happiness in our everyday lives. When we experience change, we have so many opportunities to create exciting new memories and we should do our best to take advantage of them.  This does not mean we have to erase old memories from our minds, but rather be able to look at them in a different manner.  If we truly long for happiness, then we cannot waste our limited time on Earth wishing for things to go back to the way they once appeared to be.  We can, however, share memories with close family members and friends to spread more love and laughter, especially during this wonderful holiday season.  It is important not to make these memories a focal point in your life, though.  If they are not helping you, if they are not making you happy, or if they are keeping you from living your life to it’s fullest potential, then it is time to let them go.

We have to come to a point in our lives when we realize some things are just not worth grieving over or fighting for anymore.  We have to be able to forgive ourselves for anything we may have done wrong, knowing that we will never let it happen again.  We also must be strong enough to realize that everything happens for a reason, even if we never discover what that reason may be.  Everyone deserves happiness and in order to achieve happiness we have to be able to move on and learn from the past.  We have to learn to start new again.  As Steve Maraboli wisely writes, “The beautiful journey of today can only begin when we learn to let go of yesterday”.
